Term 4 Week 10 - Last Post

We are now in the last week of the 2010 school year, which I find hard to believe. So much has happened and we have learnt lots of new things. We have loved story writing and learning to read and 'do' maths. It is great to look back on the two terms we have been in Room 13 and see the progress we have made. Thank you for your support at home, especially with reading. It does make a difference.

I have loved being with the fantastic children of Room 13. Thank you for sharing them with me.

At the end of October I issued a challenge: the family making the most comments on our blog would win a prize. Congratulations to Nico's family who made the most comments. Thank you for taking the time to read our blog and add your comments.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from us all in Room 13. May you have a safe and happy holiday.

The Three Trees

WOW! The School Production was amazing! The Kapa Haka group opened the evening with waiata and haka. Then the Middle and Senior Syndicates treated us to 'Messages from Broadway' before the Junior Syndicate presented their show. I am very proud of the Room 13 children - they were amazing as the picnickers and their ad libbing was superb. Thank you for your support over the last few weeks and for watching us last night.
Here's some of our recounts about the production:

On Tuesday I went to the picnickers' production. I was happy because my Mum and Grandfather and sister were there. Room 13 is very, very good. The picnic is fun. I saw the teacher in the production.
Then I went to the house and I went to sleep.
By Steven

Last night Christ the King School did a production. Room 13 were picnickers. The production was called The Three Trees. We watched the seniors do their production. Then we did our production.
By Gemma

On Tuesday Room 13 did a performance with the Juniors. We were the picnickers with my sister. My sister was Pirate Jack. I liked my sister's speech.
By Matthew

Last night I went to Burnside High School. I did a production. I was a picnicker. Josie was my mum. Then I watched Kapa Haka. When theproduction was finished I went to Mum and Dad.
By Emilie

Last night I went to the production. We were the picnickers. The Senior Production went first then it was us. But we weren't the first ones on the stage. It was called The Three Trees. The three trees were Lily, Elora, and Alex.
By Alannah

Last night my friends in my class, but not me, performed on stage. I didn't go on because I was sick. I took two days off school. I was jealous because Luke went on stage.

Term 4 Week 6 - 'Star of the Week'

What a great week we have had - swimming, production practice, and Christ the King day celebrations.
I am very proud of the way Room 13 children have coped with this unusual week; their behaviour has been great and they have all done their best at all events.
However two boys have stood out this week:
Congratulations to Nico and Benj, our 'Stars of the Week'.
Both have been good role models when we have been swimming.
They are also working hard at reading.
Thank you, Nico and Benj, it's great to have you in Room 13.

Writing in Room 13

In Room 13 we love to write about things we have done. Watch the video to see us working, then read some recounts of Room 12's production - 'Wake Up Bear'.
Room 12 were amazing and Room 13 enjoyed their performance.

Wake Up Bear by Room 12

Today we went to Room 12's production. The animals that came first were the lions. The show was called 'Wake Up Bear'. All of the animals tried to wake up the bear but he would still not wake up. Just then a bee buzzed by. The bear woke up. 'Honey!' he shouted. Then he started to skip all around in his cave. Then they sang two songs together.
By Bailey

Today we watched Room 12's production 'Wake Up Bear'. The lions couldn't wake up bear. But the bee woke up bear. My favourite part was the bear.

School Fair

What a fantastic day for the school fair. It was great to see so many of you there. The high light for me was seeing four Room 13 children busking. Term 4 Week 3 'Star of the Week' and News

This week has been busy and we have all worked hard.
We have finished our 'All About Arthur' poems and the collaged letters to illustrate them. Come into the classroom to see them. We also have our '10 Little Rubber Ducks' pictures on the wall. Next week we will be working in groups to collage a character from an Eric Carle book.

This week our 'Star of the Week' is Molly.
Molly has been focused on her learning and is a great role model in class.
Thank you, Molly, it's great to have you in Room 13.

On Fridays we read with our buddy class - Room 8. Both rooms look forward to this each week. The Room 13 children read a book from their browsing box, then the Room 8 children read a library book. Sometimes our big buddies help us with our work as well. Thanks, Room 8, we love spending time with you.

The new News Day rota is working well. The children are developing oral language skills as they talk about their show and tell items.

Fair Day is nearly here. Our room is full of 'white elephant' items. I am looking forward to browsing through and maybe picking up a bargain or two. A highlight will be the busking. Look out for the Room 13 quartet!

We have not had many comments on our blog lately. We do love reading your comments, so to encourage you to write I am offering a prize to the family who makes the most comments over the next 3 weeks.

Congratulations, Flynn, on being the 'Star of the Week'.
It's great to have you as a member of Room 13. Thank you.

Collage Art Work

We have been creating art work using the same technique as Eric Carle - collage.
Today we finished our 'Flowers in a Vase'.
To create these masterpieces we first painted a vase using water colours. Then we cut flowers and stems out of magazines. When the vase was dry we cut it out. Then we glued the vase, stems, and flowers onto a skinny piece of paper. The last thing we did was draw a black spot in the middle of each flower.
The completed work looks fantastic and we are all proud of what we have done.
Check out the photos, or come into Room 13, to see our fantastic work.

He is a great role model showing us how to sit on the mat. He settles to his work quickly and quietly.

On Friday we did some problem solving. We had to work in groups to sort teddy bears. We each read a clue then put the right coloured bear in the right place in the line. Some of us found it a bit tricky, but we managed to solve the problem in the end.

Reminders:
*Library day is Monday - please bring library books back on Monday
*Poetry books go home on Fridays for weekend reading. These books need to be brought back to school on Monday so the new poem can be glued in.
*Some children's white board markers are becoming very sad - they either have squashed nibs or are running out. It would be a great help if you could purchase a new white board pen for your child.
*We are still keen to obtain old t-shirts for art shirts.
*Fair news: this week we will be collecting mystery bottles. These can be placed in the black bin in Room 13. Any other fair items can also be placed in this bin.
Thanks for all your support with life in Room 13 - we do appreciate it.

The Amazing Jake

On Thursday we  listened to Jake play his guitar. Jake is Alannah's guitar teacher. Alannah also got her guitar out. Jake told us the name of the strings. Jake gave Alannah a special pick so she doesn't hurt her thumb when she strums her guitar. We were amazed at Jake's playing and we enjoyed it.

Friday 13 August - Mufti Day

Friday has been very busy.
Zac had his 6th Birthday and we sang 'Happy Birthday' to him.
We also had a mufti day. We loved being able to choose our own clothes. The money we raised is going towards October's fair.
The day finished with a school mass to celebrate the Assumption of Mary.
Bailey prayed a Prayer of the Faithful. We are proud of the way she prayed as she spoke clearly.
I was proud of the Room 13 children who showed respect while we were in church.

Our 'Star of the Week' is Alannah.
Alannah is a great story writer. She sounds out words as she writes. Alannah is also a good reader, reading the words she knows and using her phonics knowledge to work out words she doesn't know.
Congratulations Alannah, it's great to have you in Room 13.

Reminders:
*Library day is Monday
*If you can help with the toy and game stall for the fair, please let me or the office know.

Birthdays

In Room 13 we are having lots of birthdays.
Today Hannah and MinSeo turned 6.
We sang 'Happy Birthday' to them and gave them a birthday certificate.

Today we started skipping. Some of us found it a bit tricky, but we all kept trying. We will keep practising so we can get better.

Thank you for checking out our blog and for posting your comments. We love reading what other people think about our work.
